Zimbabwe
‘Gloriosa Rothschildiana’ or ‘Flame Lily’, a native to the tropical continent of Africa, is the national flower of Zimbabwe. The large flowers look like claws and are available in combinations of yellow and red colours. The flowers blossom in spring and have always fascinated the people of Zimbabwe with its exquisite charm.
When the flowers are in full bloom, the entire plant appears to be on fire and hence it gets its name, flame lily. Due to its highly attractive appearance the plant can be seen in almost all the gardens of the country and is quite a favourite of the people. The vine is weak and therefore it is primarily used to cover fences. Flame lily is well known for its use as cut flowers as it lasts quite long and thus the flower provides good business to the florists of the country.
In addition to the cosmetic uses, the flame lily is held with high regard by the people of Zimbabwe. The garland of leaves of the flower is found to be depicted on the reverse side of the one cent coins of Zimbabwe as a mark of respect to their national flower.
