Vanda miss Joaquim was declared the national flower of Singapore on 15th April 1981 in order to promote the growth and the national identity of the country. This beautiful orchid is actually a hybrid and derives its name from that of its breeder. The plant bears ravishing purple flowers all year round in Singapore which helps promote the aesthetic appeal of the country for tourists, which is a primary source of income for most of its natives.

The flower is found throughout Singapore and is used to ornate most of the public and private gardens of the country. Vanda miss Joaquim won over 40 other flower contestants because it is believed to represent Singapore’s relentless endeavour to progress and excel in all realms of life. Moreover, the orchid which flowers unceasingly throughout the year is a symbol of the resilient nature of the people of the country and their determined perseverance which help the people to sail through all the trials and tribulations of life.
