Ireland
Shamrock holds a special place in the country of Ireland which has accepted it as the national flower. This three-leaved plant seems to be an integral part of Irish life, society and culture.
Shamrock was made all the more significant by St Patrick, who used the tri-foliate flower in his sermon to vividly explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. In his explanation, the three leaves of shamrock stand for the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit which according to him could exist simultaneously, as separate elements of the same entity. Nowadays, it is a custom among his follower’s to wear a shamrock on his day of feast, the 17th of March which is popularly known as St Patrick’s Day in Ireland and elsewhere.
The flower was traditionally used more for its medicinal value. In Ireland shamrock is popularly used in the logos and badges of various sports teams, state organizations, and troops going abroad from Ireland like the Shamrock Rovers FC, Aer Lingus, IDA Ireland, IRFU, University College Dublin as well as the University of Notre Dam. The symbol of Shamrock represents Ireland in the World Intellectual Property Organization. The flower is also depicted in a wreath on the coat of arms on the flag of the Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross Foundation.
