France
The golden fleur-de-lis is the national emblem of the French republic. It is a stylized iris flower with both ornamental and symbolic significance. This unique flower has three sepals which resemble the petals and three shorter petals. The colours of these flowers include purple, blue, light blue, white and white with a tinge of purple
Fleur-de-lis is the symbol of purity and the emblem of the monarchy in France where it has been displayed on the royal coat-of-arms. Later, the use of this symbol can be widely found in the royal clothing during ceremonies and even on seals.
In religion, fleur-de-lis signifies the Holy Trinity, according to an age old French tradition which goes back as far as the 14th century. It is also associated with Mother Mary and referred to as ‘a symbol of saintliness’. Joan of Arc, while leading the French troops in the war against England was seen to carry a banner depicting God blessing the royal emblem of France.
Since antiquity, the flower is present in the art, paintings, and the culture of France. As far back as the 12th century, a lady on a nobleman’s seal was seen carrying fleur-de-lis in her hands.
