Agapanthus
Agapanthus is mostly noted for its ‘magical’ and medicinal properties and is associated with pregnancy and fertility. The roots are used by the African tribal women to prepare an anti natal medicine. Again, a necklace is made out of the roots as a charm to bear healthy babies. The plant is found to be very effective for curing heart ailments, paralysis, coughs, colds, chest pains and various other diseases. The leaves are believed to heal sore feet and alleviate high fever. But the intake of the sap can be dangerous as it causes severe ulceration in the mouth.
Agapanthus belongs to the family of ‘Agapanthaceae’. These perennial herbs bear flowers which are shaped like funnels and these are available in shades of white and different hues of blue. The attractive flowers blossom in mid summer and allure insects and birds which help in pollination. The flower derives its name from the Greek words ‘agape' which means ‘love' and ‘anthos' meaning ‘flower’.
The easy-to-cultivate agapanthus prospers in well-drained soils and are popularly included in gardens, used for landscaping purposes, grown in pots and are also well known as cut flowers.
