Crocus

The popular spring flower crocus derives its name from the Greek word ‘kroko’ which in languages like Hebrew, Aramaic, Persian and Arabic means saffron or saffron yellow. This name is given for a reason - we get the spice saffron from the stigma of a specific species of crocus called ‘Crocus sativus’ which flowers only in autumn. The crocus flower stands single, shaped like a cup which narrows down into a tube-like structure. A wonderful variety of colours are to be found ranging from lilac, mauve, yellow and white.

Crocus belongs to the iris family. There are around eighty species of crocus to be found. They are all perennial plants which are somewhat woody in nature and are predominantly found in woodlands, scrub and meadows. Crocus is grown extensively in the coastal and sub-alpine areas of central and southern Europe (including the Aegean Islands), North Africa and the Middle East, Central Asia and China. The plant requires a sunny climate and a well-drained soil.

Crocus is primarily important for the production of saffron which is considered to be the most expensive spice in recent times. The medicinal property of the powdered saffron is believed to cure a number of diseases including rheumatism, jaundice and measles. Crocus found a special place in the Minoan murals and artefacts of the Bronze Age. Evidences prove its association with the sacred rituals related to childbirth and menstruation in the ancient times.
