St John's Wort
St John’s wort does not have only cosmetic appeal; it is more valuable for the outstanding medicinal properties it possesses. Since time immemorial, the plant has been in use to treat a range of illnesses. It is specially noted for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Moreover, its anti-inflammatory properties are effective in healing wounds and burns. Recent medical research has proven the power of St John’s wort in curing mild to moderate depression. Apart from all this, St John’s wort is useful in treating bacterial infections, alcoholism, HIV infections, premenstrual syndrome, viral encephalitis and also ear pain.
St John’s wort derives its Latin name from the Greek word ‘Hypericum’ meaning ‘over a spirit’. It is believed that the plant helps to ward off evil spirits especially during summer when the body and mind are overpowered by heat and light.
The plant is a perennial shrub which gets its name after the Baptist, St John whose birthday is on April 24, the time this plant usually breaks into blossom which lasts till August. The flowers are dazzling yellow with five oval petals. The plant thrives best in dry to moist soil and requires bright sunlight or partial shade.
