Pasque
The pasque is the state flower of South Dakota and of the province of Manitoba. The ‘Ranunculaceae’ family, the one in which pasque belongs, means the ‘little frog’ in Latin since some of the species of this family inhabit places where frogs live.
These deciduous perennial plants are found to grow in masses and are believed to have around 30 different species. The flower is bell-shaped, appearing singly on the stalk and rising to half a feet above the ground. The flowers, which blossom in spring, contain about half a dozen petals and the shades vary from deep lavender to white. The yellow stamen forms the central part of the flower, the leaves are feathery and the plant bears a plum-like fruit.
The plant thrives well in soil that contains sand and gravel and is well drained. It is quite familiar in the prairie region and grows naturally all over Europe, North America and Asia.
The plant grows very close to the ground and is popularly found in gardens. The plant is also used to treat eye ailments like cataracts.
