Clover belongs to the pea family of ‘Fabaceae’. The plant is a creeper which can grow to an average height of 2 metres. The long compound leaves have three oval leaflets without stalks. The leaves are dark green with slight, white marks on them. Around 100 flowers are found to cluster on the tapering tip, which is shaped like pea and these flowers are white and pink in colour. The flowers blossom from May to September.

Sweet clover is found abundantly in Asia, Europe, Canada and the United States of America. It thrives well in soils which are moist and less fertile. This cold- season perennial propagates mainly by its roots and sometimes by its creeping stems. Because of its capability to propagate rapidly the plant has been characterized as an invasive one.

Clover is mainly found to decorate lawns and gardens due to its appealing look. The rich nectar content of the flowers makes it an important source of honey. It is also one of the vital elements in herbal medicines. The red clover is helpful particularly in hot flashes and menopausal problems. Red clover tea is found to be very effective for purifying blood, for helping cure bronchitis and other respiratory spasms.
