Hemp
Hemp is an extremely useful plant. It is the source of various clothing and nutritional products. The oil extracted from the seeds is an important ingredient in paints. This oil is also used for cooking as well as a moisturizing agent in nourishing creams. Hemp seed is used as bird feed. The fibres produced from the plant are extensively used in construction and for manufacturing purposes. Hemp is also used as food products. The seeds are used for baking, to make flour, cake and various protein powders. Like soy, sometimes milk is also extracted from hemp which is made into ice creams.
Hemp is grown under strict regulation in Canada and in the European Union. This is because a psychoactive drug called ‘marijuana’ is produced from this plant. The plant grows to an average height of about 2.5 feet with its long, reddish stems. The green-white or white flowers cluster at the terminal end of the stalk and bloom from July to August. Due to the weight at the top, the flower heads sometimes droop.
