Germander
Germander belongs to the family of ‘Lamiaceae’ with several species. Depending upon its various species the plant can be a shrub, herb or a sub-shrub. The most popular among the germander species is the ‘wall germander’ which is a creeper. This perennial plant is biennial with leaves which are divided into oval lobes arranged in opposite directions. The leaves are dark green and glossy in appearance. These evergreen leaves are quite fragrant in nature.
The flowers of Germander are tubular and two lipped. They appear in clusters and are pink or purple in colour. The flowers bloom in the later part of spring till the beginning of summer.
Germander can be found almost everywhere and it is quite familiar in Europe and the middle-East. The plant can survive severe natural calamities like drought and thrives well in soils with a rich content of calcium which may or may not be fertile. It requires bright sunlight and does not survive without it.
The leaves of germander are used for medicinal purposes. The beauty of the plant has made a popular inclusion in the gardens. It is widely used for landscaping and as borders in gardens. It is quite a familiar plant in rock gardens or herb gardens.
