Dandelion
Dandelion derives its name from the French word ‘dent-de-lion’ which means ‘lion’s tooth’. This is because of the long leaves of dandelion which are shaped like a lance and have very toothy and sharp margins. The simple leaves grow from the base of the plant.
Unlike the other composite flowers which are a combination of ray florets and disc florets, dandelion consists of numerous ray florets which appear in a cluster giving the flower a single look. The flowers are yellow and blossom from early spring to late fall. A protective bract is found just below the inflorescence which bends downward. Over 250 different species of dandelion are found to exist.
Depending on the various species, dandelions can be biennial or perennial. This herbaceous plant can be found widely all through the temperate areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Due to its rapid propagation, dandelion has been categorized as an invasive weed.
Apart from their showy appearance which has included dandelion in the list of popular flowers, it also has various other uses. The edible plant is grown as a leafy vegetable and is consumed in soups or salads. The leaves have rich vitamin A, vitamin C and iron content. It is known as a diuretic and is also effective in the treatment of jaundice, anaemia and nervousness.
