Yarrow

According to Greek mythology, yarrow evolved from the rust, which was scraped off from Achilles’ spear while healing a wounded man. Thus the plant gets its botanical name ‘Achillea millefolium’ and it belongs to the family of ‘Asteraceae’.

This perennial herb displays composite flowers, containing ray and disc florets, which cluster on the flat flower heads. The flowers blossom in May and last till June and are of yellow, pink, white or red colour. The leaves are feathery and look somewhat like ferns.

The plant is found in the Northern Hemisphere. As it is able to survive in moderate drought conditions, it is often cultivated to check soil erosion. It grows in soils that are well-drained and requires bright sunlight.

The attractive yarrow plants find their use in borders and rock gardens. They are also popular as cut flowers. But for centuries, yarrow has been known as a ‘healing herb’ and is effective for wounds and abrasions. Yarrow is also noted for its astringent effects and is used in the treatment of headache and piles. The essential oil extracted from the flowers provides an effective remedy for coughs and colds.
