Hydrangea
Hydrangea, a deciduous plant with a bush-like appearance, belongs to the family of ‘Hydrangeaceae’. The perennial plant bears large clusters of flowers which form the flower head at the terminal end of the stalk. The head contains two types of flowers, the fertile female flowers which form the centre with the sterile male flowers at the margin acting as a support to the female flowers. The flowers bloom from the early parts of spring till the later part of autumn and are of pink, blue, white, lilac or purple colour.
Hydrangea has almost 70-75 different species growing well in moist, fertile and loamy soil and preferring full sunlight. The colour range can differ highly in these species depending upon the soil conditions. While the flowers, grown in acidic soils, bear blue flowers, those grown in neutral soils bear soft cream coloured flowers. Hydrangeas are considered to be very attractive and are included in the gardens as flower beds and are also used for landscaping. The plant also bears highly decorative leaves from spring to fall when ultimately they wither and autumnl.
The plant, which grows to an average height of about 10 feet, is found in central and eastern Asia, the Himalayas, and North and South America.
