Ivy
Ivies are found to be climbers and creepers depending on the different species. It belongs to the genus ‘Hedera’ of the ‘Araliaceae’ family. The aerial roots of the plant help it in climbing up sometimes even to a height of 25 metres. Around 50 different species of the plant are available with marked differences in their physical characteristics.
Ivy has two different types of leaves. The young leaves appear on the stems which climb and creep with the more mature leaves appearing on the flowering stems. The plant blossoms in the later part of autumn and the flowers appear in clusters and are greenish-yellow in colour. The rich nectar content of the plant attracts bees and other insects which help in pollination. The plant bears black, berry-like fruits.
Ivy is almost to be found everywhere and grows abundantly in regions like the Atlantic Islands, western, central and southern Europe, north-western Africa and across central-southern Asia. Because of their rapid propagation, ivy is categorized as an invasive plant in some parts of North America.
