Hibiscus
Hibiscus has its share in the history of different countries and it is the national flower of Korea and Malaysia and state flower of Hawaii. The colour of the flower stands for compassion and the healing of the inner spirit in India. The flower is an integral part of the Hindu religion and is used as an offering to the Hindu goddess Kali and the Hindu god Ganesha.
Hibiscus belongs to the mallow family and can either be an herb or a shrub. The tropical plant bears large flowers shaped somewhat like trumpets. The flower contains five or more petals and can be available in pink, white, purple, red or yellow colours. The simple leaves are arranged alternately and appear toothy at the margins.
Hibiscus can be annual and perennial depending on the species and is found almost all over the world in the subtropical, tropical and temperate regions.
Hibiscus is famous for its attractive flowers and is used in landscaping. Different species of the flower have different uses. While some are used in paper making some others are consumed as a vegetable and also used in the preparation of jams and herbal teas. The antioxidant properties of the plant prevent cholesterol and are effective in the treatment of ailments such as constipation, hypertension, nausea.
