Floss belongs to the genus ‘Ageratum’ of the plant family ‘Asteraceae’. The plant has an annual life cycle and grows to an average height of 2 feet. It bears clusters of flowers which blossom from spring and last till autumn. The flowers, which are shaped like a ball, have a fuzzy look and are available in shades of lavender, purple, pale pink, white and off white. The fragrant flowers attract insects like butterflies, bees and birds which help with pollination. This herbaceous plant bears dark-green leaves and the plant is propagated with the help of seeds.

The plant thrives on rich fertile soils which must be well drained. It requires bright sunlight. The plant is abundantly found in different places in the U.S.A.

It is also popular as cut flower and used to decorate the interiors. Since the floss flower has a tendency to grow rapidly, it is often categorized as an invasive species.
