Tuberose
The name ‘tuberose’ has been derived from the Latin word ‘tuberosa’ which means ‘tuberous’ and refers to the swollen roots of the plant. This perennial plant belongs to the ‘Agave’ family and bears exceptionally fragrant flowers which are white in colour.
The flowers appear with waxy outer surfaces and are arranged in clusters on the long vertical stalk. The flowers open their petals at night. Hence, in many Indian languages the flower is referred to as the “queen of the night”. The intoxicating smell of the flowers attracts various insects which help in pollination. The long leaves, which are of bright green colour, are found to cluster at the base of the plant. The stem bears much smaller leaves which hold to it closely.
Originating in Central America, the plant is common almost in all countries across the globe. Tuberose thrives best in warm climate and in bright sunlight and is quite popular for it fragrant flowers and pleasing shades of it flowers.
