Rhododendron belongs to the heath family and the plant derives its name from the Greek words meaning ‘rose tree’. Rhododendrons are often described as the ‘king of shrubs’ because of their beautiful blossoms. The flowers, which appear in clusters, blossom in spring and are available in a host of colours like lilac purple, rosy lilac, white, light rose and rose, red and pink.

This evergreen tree is noted to have a huge number of species each of which show marked variations in sizes. The plant bears leaves which have a leathery appearance and are placed spirally on the stem. Each and every part of the plant is poisonous. It grows well in moist, well drained and acidic soil and is widely available in the Mediterranean region.

The plant is an eternal favourite of all because of its showy appearance and the large colourful flowers. It is extensively used for landscaping as it is an evergreen plant. Rhododendrons are also popular as cut flowers and are also grown for exclusive commercial purpose.

Rhododendron is the national flower of various countries like Nepal and Sikkim and is declared the state flower of West Virginia.
