Baby's Breath
Another name for baby’s breath is ‘Gypsophilia’. The delicate small flowers of this annual plant are predominantly white and pink which form clusters on the long stalks. The flower starts its bloom during April and August and is available round the year. This woody plant is bushy with the stems forming numerous branches giving it a somewhat frizzy look.
Due to its frizzy look, Baby’s breath is popularly used in bouquets and as filler plant in the gardens. The dried flowers are commonly used for decoration and in preparing wreaths. Baby’s breath is specially used during Christmas. The most well known varieties of baby’s breath are ‘Million Star New Love’ and ‘Party Time’.
The plant grows to an average height of 1-2 ft. It is found all through the Northern Hemisphere, in Eastern and Central Europe and the eastern part of the US. Baby’s breath can survive short-term drought and the plant grows well in wastelands and gardens, with bright sunlight and soils that are drained well. Acidic soil is not suitable for the plant.
