Broom
Broom stands for a group of shrub and belongs to the legume family of ‘fabaceae’. Brooms include a wide variety of species and likewise the plants are evergreen, semi-evergreen or deciduous in nature. All the species bear narrow closely crowded leaves which are tiny in size. The flowers are mostly white but red, pink white, orange, or purple flowers are also found.
Brooms grow well without much care in inferior soils which should be well drained. Broom is regarded as an invasive weed and is widely found in southwest Asia, Europe and North Africa. In the Mediterranean region the largest varieties of broom can be seen.
"Sweep the house with blessed broom in May/sweep the head of the household away"- says a traditional rhyme from Sussex. The common broom grows profusely in north-western Europe, where it is found to grow on soils which are usually dry and contain sand. It requires bright sunlight. The apparently leafless stems of common broom get covered with golden-yellow blossoms in spring and
Brooms are regarded as ornamental plants. The flower and buds of certain species are used in salads. Another species produce a useful yellow dye.
