Bergamot
Bergamot, the popular herb is a member of the mint family and is primarily noted for its numerous uses. The young, edible leaves of Bergamot are widely used as a dressing for salads, fruit beverages and fruit salads. It also adds flavour to pork dishes. The plant is known for its strong fragrance which resembles citreous oranges. Both the fresh and the dried leaves are used to prepare herbal tea. An essential oil is extracted from its leaves, which is effective in the cure of respiratory problems. The leaves are used to steam facial pores. The juice extracted from the leaves is used to paint and add flavour to potpourris.
The bergamot flowers cluster on the head of the stalk in a bunch. The colour varies between pink and lavender. The flower contains a mild fragrance but the strong scent of the leaves overpowers that of the flowers. The flowers blossom in July and August.
The herb was introduced to the Americans by the Oswego Indians. Found to grow in the United States the plant thrives well in damp soil conditions during summer. It prefers bright sunlight but grows in shade as well. It is a popular outdoor and indoor plant.
