Bellflower

Bellflower is categorized as an invasive weed due to the plant’s aggressive propagation. The herb belongs to the genus ‘Campanula’ and is a perennial. It bears showy flowers which are shaped like bells or wheels and are violet or blue in colour. The blue bellflowers are popularly known as ‘bluebells’. The usual bloom of most of the flowers is found in June and July while some other varieties flower in May and some in August. Bellflower is found to have a variety of different species and with each species, the sizes of the plants also vary.

Although most of the Bellflowers are found to be perennials, certain species are also found to be annuals while some others are biennials. The plant is grown extensively throughout the Northern Hemisphere. It requires moist and shady climatic conditions and inferior quality soil for the best growth.

The large variations in the flower structure and colour make bellflower a popular garden flower. Some species display blue-lilac flowers growing upright. Some other variety contains wide 5 petal-like points on the flower while some others produce violet-blue flowers.
