Bee Balm
Bee balm or ‘Monarda didyma’ grows to a height of 2-4 ft and bears flowers which are available in shades of red, purple, pink, lavender and white. Among the flowers, white seems to grow the tallest followed by red and purple, all of which flower throughout summer. A newer variety of double flowers are also seen to exist. This delicate plant becomes an easy prey to powdery mildew disease.
What makes bee balm a popular and a well-known flower is its low maintenance. The plant can be grown without much complications and it thrives well in soils with a bit of sand and soils that are loamy and sufficiently watered. But occasionally it is also found to grow in dry soils as well, however, care should be taken to ensure that the soil ph is neutral. It requires bright sunlight but even grows in partial shade. This beautiful flower readily attracts humming birds which in turn help in the propagation of this sturdy plant.
If the plant gets favourable growing conditions it can prove highly invasive since its multiplication is done very easily and within a short span of time. Otherwise, it is a popular garden flower.
