Curcuma
Curcuma derives its name from the Arabic word ‘kurkum’ which means yellow. This name is due to the colour of the rhizomes or the flowers which are yellow. The flower is unique in itself. The upper part of the flowering plant which is guarded by a modified leaf called bract is pink, lilac or white in colour whereas the real flowers are actually present on the lower part of the bract. The flowers contain a sweet fragrance more or less like spice.
The genus of 'curcuma' belongs to the ‘Zingiberaceae’ or the ginger family which is believed to have around 70 known species. Some of the well known species of this genus are turmeric and Siam Tulip.
Curcuma is extensively found in South East Asia. It is a popular garden flower and is also used as cut flowers for its longer life span which can be even up to 22 days. The spice produced by a species of curcuma called ‘Curcuma longa’, is a popular food colouring and forms a major ingredient in curry powder.
