Wallflower
The wallflower belongs to the genus of ‘Erysimum’. The plant is bushy and can be either perennial or biennial. The plant is short and is of an average height of 12-18 inches. It contains narrow leaves which are 2-4 inches in length. The flowers are bright orange in colour and bloom during April and May. The genus has a number of different species of plants which is believed to be more than 220.
These species can be annual or perennial short plants which can be either herbaceous or semi-shrubs. They have a very short life span. The flowers range widely in colour which includes yellow, pink or red flowers blossoming during the spring and the summer. Certain species are found to bear white flowers too.
Wallflowers are found extensively throughout Europe, North America, south-west Asia, the Mediterranean region, and Macaronesia. The plants can be grown both in dry and moist climate with bright sun or partial shade and require dry soils which are well drained.
Apart from being a popular garden flower, wallflower is the source of food for the larvae of some Lepidoptera species like German Carpet. Moreover, different species of beetles, bugs and grasshoppers also thrive on its leaves and stalks.
