Snowdrop
Snowdrops are considered to be the herald of spring. Snowdrops, look like white carpets and are highly appreciated by sightseers and visitors. In Scotland, a snowdrop festival is held where 60 gardens participated.
Snowdrop belongs to the family of ‘Amaryllidaceae’ and is bulbous in nature. The plant grows to a height of about 15cm with long and narrow leaves. The flower hangs in the shape of a bell and stands singly at the end of a relatively long stalk. The outer three parts of the six-petal flowers are found to be larger in size and more convex than the inner segments. The three-celled ovary, when matured, opens into a three-celled capsule. The flower is essentially white in colour and blossoms in January or February.
The plant is found primarily in the northern temperate zone and a number of varieties of snowdrop can be found which show distinct differences in their characteristics. The plant is multiplied by growing offsets. Apart from this, a method called ‘twin scaling’ is also used for the propagation of the plant.
