Marjoram
Marjoram seems to hold a special place for the Greeks and there is a possibility that Marjoram holds its origin in ancient Greece. In the olden times, the plant was placed on the graves of loved ones in Greece as homage to the departed souls with a belief that they would rest in peace and be happy forever. Moreover, it used to be a part of the Greek and Roman wedding as wreaths for the wedding couple and symbolized love, honour and happiness.
Marjoram is primarily noted for its sweet pine and citrus aroma which earned it the name of ‘sweet marjoram’. The perennial plant can either be a herb or an under shrub and is sensitive to cold. Marjoram is common in southern parts of Europe and is found to grow mainly in dry copses and on hedge-banks.
This member of the mint family is used for culinary purposes in its fresh and dried forms and is used to add flavour to foodstuff such as lamb, sausage and beef. Its aroma is also used in soaps and wreaths. Oregano is often known as ‘wild marjoram’ and has similar uses.
The medicinal uses of marjoram are many. It is used for steam inhalation to bring a relief to laryngitis. Marjoram tea when taken with honey is often taken by the singers to improve voices. In ancient times the herb was used in the embalming process.
