Hyacinth

The beauty of Hyacinth flowers is highly regarded and Mohammed, the prophet, is known to have said, “If I had but two loaves of bread, I would sell one and buy hyacinths, for they would feed my soul.” Hyacinths not only look appealing but also emit a heady fragrance. These spring flowers are shaped like bells and they blossom in tight clusters and are available in bright shades of orange, yellow, pink, red, and denser shades of blue, lavender and purple. The bulb of the hyacinth is lighter in colour, ranging between purple and cream in shade.

Hyacinth, named after the well-known Greek mythological hero, is in fact a common name given to 30 different plants and flowers, all of which belong to the Hyacinthus genus. It was earlier, mistakenly, placed in the lily family before it found its own genus. These flowers originate from the exotic Mediterranean, Iran, Turkmenistan and from Africa. Hyacinths often symbolise rebirth in many cultures and are most often used during the Persian New Year.
