Dill

The name dill is supposed to have originated from the Norse or Anglo-Saxon word ‘dylle’ which means ‘to have a calming effect’. The flowers cluster on the stem like an umbrella and are found in white, soft shades of lime and golden yellow. The powerful fragrance of the flower attracts insects like bees and flies who, in turn, help with pollination. The leaves are arranged alternately and look almost like feathers. The seed can be either grown straight or little curved.

This herbaceous plant grows annually and has quite a short life span. It grows well in bright sunlight and thrives best in fertile soils which should be well-drained. Dill is commonly found in central and southwest Asia.

Dill, the popular herb, is noted for its aniseed smell and is often used for culinary purposes. The aroma of the dried and fresh leaves is used as a popular flavour for foodstuff. The seeds of dill are used as spices. Different parts of the plant like the stem, leaves and the seeds are used in the production of dill oil. Apart from this, dill can provide relief from indigestion, colic pain and gas problems.
