Calla lily belongs to the genus of ‘Zantedeschia’. The name of this genus is given as a tribute to the famous botanist of Italy, Giovanni Zantedeschi. Though it is not regarded as a true lily, the simple flowers are quite popular for their beauty, appearing only in June and July. The flowers are shaped like funnels and are arranged neatly on the spadix in the centre, enfolded by a petal-like spathe which is actually a modified leaf. The spadix is always yellow in colour whereas the spathe may be seen in the shades of yellow, white, pink, orange or red. The leaves of the plant look like swords because of their shapes.

Around 28 species of Zantedeschia are found to exist. All these species grow from rhizomes and are herbs which require rich, fertile well-drained soils and sunny climates. They grow well in partly shaded areas too. These perennial deciduous herbs are found primarily in South Africa.

Because of its showy appearance, Calla lily is appreciated mostly as a decorative garden flower and is widely used to outline flower beds. It is also used as cut flowers and in flower arrangements to decorate interiors. They provide nice colourful borders along the garden too.
