Amaryllis
Amaryllis derives its name from the Greek word ‘amarysso’ the meaning of which is “to sparkle”. The popular amaryllis is also known by the names of ‘Belladona lily’ or ‘naked ladies’. This genus of plant has only one species called ‘Amaryllis belladonna’. The plant bears a large, solitary flower standing on an elongated vertical stalk. The flower is shaped like a trumpet and more or less resembles a lily. It typically contains three sepals on the outer part and three petals on the inner side which look alike. The common colours are red, white, pink, and orange. Again a multicoloured variety, a combination of white with pink or red, is also found. The flowers blossom from September to February and sometimes last till May.
This bulbous plant is common in tropical countries like South Africa but also can be grown in places like Florida in the USA. The plant contains two rows of leaves, shaped like stars which are of pale green colour. The plants go dormant during summers and again come back to flower in winters. They prefer well-drained moist soils and light shades. Amaryllis can be cultivated outdoors very easily but can also easily be grown in pots.
Amaryllis is used for decorative purpose and for landscaping. It is also kept as an indoor plant.
