Daisy gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘daes eage’ meaning ‘day's eye’. Daisies are highly regarded for their resplendence as they brighten up the surroundings. White petals and a brilliant yellow centre are characteristic of each daisy flower though rarely a shade of pink or rose can also be seen. These simple flowers belong to the family called ‘Asteraceae’.

The fact that daisy is a combination of two flowers, one being the centrally located disk florets and the other being the peripheral ray florets, makes it more unique. However, it looks like a single flower only, standing on its long and slender stalk. The evergreen leaves appear as a rosette at the base. There are a number of different species of daisy which is found to exist.

All the species of this perennial plant grow well in the brilliance of sunlight and sustain best in soils which are rich and well drained, but can withstand inferior soils and partial shades as well. These flowers are found extensively in Europe and the Mediterranean region.

Daisy symbolizes simplicity and innocence. The edible leaves of the plant are used as garnishing for salads. Children use these flowers to make daisy chains. It is a well known ornamental garden flower and is widely used for decoration.
