Honeysuckle
There are about 180 species of honeysuckle and of these, more than a 100 are found only in China. The most popular species are the European Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum), the Japanese Honeysuckle, White Honeysuckle, or the Chinese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) and the Trumpet Honeysuckle, Coral Honeysuckle, or Woodbine Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens)
Many species have bell shaped flowers, all with a sweet fragrance and are mostly found in the Northern Hemisphere. The flowers can be yellow, pink or even white with a tinge of purple and the nectar from the flower is also sweet and highly edible.
Honeysuckles can either be evergreen or deciduous shrubs and vines with simple, oval and opposite leaves. It thrives best in partial sun and partial shade, and humming birds help pollinate the flowers.
Other than its aesthetic appeal, the Honeysuckle flower is also noted for its medicinal utility. Herbal tea is made from its dried flowers which have cooling and detoxifying properties that help to soothe ulcers and sore throat. Fly honeysuckle is used in homeopathic medicines for breathing troubles and asthma, as well as syphilis. As an antihistamine, the flower is used in herbal medicines across the world.
