Violet
The scientific name of this flower is ‘Viola spp.’ which belongs to the Violet family (Violaceae). Violets are available a number of different species, all of which are winter, annual or perennial plants.
Violets are popular for their exquisite appearance; however, common violets are only weeds. Common violets grow very low may be to the maximum height of 12 inches and form large, dense patches. The kidney shaped or oval leaves grow at the base of the plant, are 2-4 inches in width and are often found to be cupped. The side petals are hairy and the common colours of the flower are white, blue, purple and even yellow. They blossom in spring, growing well in the shade and preferring moist, shady and fertile soil.
Violet flowers have found many medicinal uses. The dried flowers are used to make herbal tea as well as Chinese herbal medicines. The flowers, roots and leaves are rich in vitamin A and C. The flowers are used in salads and for stuffing fish or poultry. The edible leaves can be eaten raw or can be cooked. The essence of the flowers is also used to flavour foodstuffs.
