Thrift
Thrift or ‘Sea Pink’ (Armeria maritime) is an attractive five-petal flower, which appears in clusters at the top of the flower spike, surrounded by narrow leaves. It is assumed that the name ‘thrift’ refers to the leaves which are tightly packed together and help conserve water in the salty air where it grows.
Thrift is grown all along the coasts of Britain. Commonly found in the sea-cliffs, salt marshes and stone walls close to the coast, it can even be found up to heights of 1280m on rocky mountain ledges, by the rivers, etc.
The plant is a perennial one which blossoms annually between April and October. A range of flying insects help in the pollination of the flowers. Its pretty flowers appear in deep pink or in occasional white colours. This summer flower appears to be attractive and is grown as a pot plant as well as in rock garden. However, the plant is highly poisonous and not even a single part of the plant is recommended for human consumption.
